Red Arrows have ascended to the top of the Zambian Super League at the halfway stage of the 2021/2022 season.
A goalless draw with Indeni last week, Wednesday 05 January, and a crucial 1-0 victory over rivals Zesco United saw Arrows climb to number one on the log, overtaking Green Buffaloes and Nkana.
The extra four points were vital as they took Arrows’ season tally to 33 to put some distance between them and the chasers.
The Zambian Super League is one of the most competitive leagues in Africa, and there are plenty of teams with squads that can mount title challenges. In fact, all the teams in the top seven on the log, including Arrows, Green Buffaloes, Nkana, Zesco United, Green Eagles, Power Dynamos, and Buildcon, can win the league.
With nine wins, six draws and three losses this season, Arrows is the top side in Ghana. Now that Arrows are at the top of the log, they have assumed the role of the pacesetters in the league race.
Arrows need to show that they have the mental capacity to keep ahead of the pack, maintain consistency in their performances, and continue collecting points. The team has a solid defence and scores in key moments in a match, so if they focus on themselves, the rest will take care of itself.
Red Arrows’ next assignment is an away trip to Kansanshi Dynamos on Saturday, 15 January.
Kansanshi Dynamos have suffered back-to-back defeats against Nkwazi and Zanaco are in 13th place on the table. This is a team that is motivated to win, and they will be out to score points.
This game is a big one for Arrows when looking at the broader context of the league and will determine if they kick on as the pacesetters or fall back in the mix with the chaser. Three points against Dynamos will increase their gap; Arrows should grab a comfortable 2-0 win.
