Enyimba eyeing second win of the season

22 December 2021

Enyimba will travel to play Enugu Rangers on Sunday, 26 December, for their second Nigerian Professional Football League match.

The People’s Elephants were one of the five teams on the opening day of the NPFL on Sunday 19 December to have a win. Thanks to a 2-1 victory over Abia Warriors, they secured the full three points.

As expected, Enyimba began the match as the stronger team, stamping their authority on the game. Abia Warriors struggled to keep up with the Finidi George side. Ekene Awazie opened the scoring for Enyimba in the 34th minute to give his team a 1-0 halftime lead. Abia Warriors came out fired up in the second half, creating chances as they looked to get back to level terms.

Thanks to a Paul Samson strike in the 50th minute, they eventually found the equaliser. With the game levelled 1-1, it seemed like Enyimba would settle for a draw, but Abia Warriors’ solid defence wall proved to be difficult to penetrate.

In the 77th minute, with 13 minutes remaining in the match, Enyimba finally scored the second goal via Chigozi Obasi to make it 2-1. The win was vital for Enyimba – starting the season on a good note can propel the club to have a good season.

Enyimba also received good news regarding their CAF Confederations Cup tie with Libya’s Al Ittihad. The two sides had only played one leg of their tie; Enyimba led 2-0 on aggregate after winning the home fixture, but the reverse fixture, which was supposed to be in Libya, was postponed due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.

CAF tried to look for a date for the first leg, but it proved impossible. Al Ittihad forfeited the match meaning Enyimba were granted a walkover. Enyimba has now reached the Confed Cup’s group stages, which is a great achievement for the club and its sponsor 10bet Africa.

When the Enyimba management outlined their objectives for the season, they had ambitions to compete in the league and the continental competition. The season’s primary goal has been achieved at the moment.

Now, head coach Finidi George will have to gather his players and get them to be competitive in all competitions. Enyimba is a side hungry for titles, and they want to remind Africa that they are a force to be reckoned with.

They get on the trail of fighting for the league title when they take Enugu Rangers on Sunday. The Boxing Day encounter promises to be a tight affair. Enugu Rangers were also among the winners on matchday one in the league. They defeated Katsina United 2-1.

Sunday’s match will have goals; both sides know how to score. Enyimba should outpower Enugu Rangers on the day; the People’s Elephants can come out with a comfortable 2-0 victory.
