Enyimba will aim to get back to their winning ways when they take on the Shooting Stars in the Nigeria Professional Football League on Sunday, 09 January.
The People’s Elephants had a perfect start to the season with two wins in their opening matches, but they have suffered back-to-back losses against Rivers United and Kano Pillars, which has seen them slip to ninth place on the table.
The fresh 2-0 loss against Kano Pillars is one that’s left many Enyimba fans frustrated. The team was performing the best during the game but failed to take advantage of their chances, and head coach Findi George said his side had no excuses for the disappointing loss.
“No excuses, we’ve lost; but in a game like this when we want to win, and we had the chance to have scored maybe two or three goals in the first half, but we didn’t take them,” said George.
“That gives the opponent the courage to come at us, and that’s what happened – they got a penalty, and they woke up. It is just for us to see how we can get ourselves back and make sure we can win our home game. There is no excuse,” said George to Enyimba’s media.
Despite the defeats, Enyimba is still in good standing in the league with six points, just two points behind the joint log leaders Remo Stars and Rivers United.
The team has not lost this season in the CAF Confederations Cup and NPFL. In these early stages, losses mean very little, and they can be accounted for as the season progresses.
The two defeats will allow Enyimba to regroup and regain focus. The coaching staff will analyse the games to see where the team is not performing well, why they are dominating games but not wining. They will have to help the strikers find a way back to scoring goals.
The players’ character will also be tested during this period. They must show that they have the mental capacity to bounce back from disappointing results. If they can pull through together as a core, their spirit will be on a high as the season progresses.
The match with Shooting Stars for Enyimba is a cup final, and it feels like their most important game of the season. The Enyimba players will have to give a complete performance on Sunday against Shooting Stars and fight for a good result in front of their adoring supporters.
A win will get their campaign back on track and push them up the table. All things being equal, Enyimba should beat Shooting Stars 2-0.
