Enyimba looking for a win this week

30 December 2021

The People’s Elephants have been blowing their trumpet so far in the Nigerian Professional Football League, staking their claim for a title challenge. This week Findi George’s Enyimba troops will brace themselves for game against Kano Pillars.

In the two games played in the league since its return, Enyimba has been one of the standout teams. Although it is still early days, Enyimba is intent on regaining the league and being the best side in the NPFL this season.

In their opening match, they defeated Abia Warriors 2-1, then on Sunday 26 December, Enyimba secured a 1-0 away win at Enugu Rangers. The three points gained from the Enugu Rangers victory were courtesy of a Chukwuemeka Obioma goal – the perfect Christmas gift for the fans.

The two wins from the season have seen Enyimba rise to second place on the log, and they are level with number one Remo Stars, at six points. This season looks like it will be a three-horse race for the title, with Enyimba set to battle it out with defending champions Akwa United and the current log leaders Remo Stars.

Based on their historical dominance, Enyimba should have the upper hand in the title. The side is determined to do well, and under the guidance of George, Enyimba is a well-drilled team and is returning to their top physical fitness.

Last month, the rest of the league was in their preseason camps. Enyimba played in the opening rounds of the CAF Confederations Cup, eventually qualifying for the group stages. The fact that Enyimba were playing competitive football while others were not has given them an advantage in terms of match fitness.

Sides in the NPFL are building towards attaining match fitness, while Enyimba has already reached peak fitness level standards in the elite division. With the two upcoming fixtures this week, Enyimba will not struggle, and Findi George will have to find the perfect balance in rotating the players.

The People’s Elephants will begin the new year with an encounter with Kano Pillars on Sunday, 2 January 2022. Sundays match with Kano Pillars should be a walk in the park for Enyimba, Kano Pillar are yet to pick up a win this season, and they won’t get their first scalp against Enyimba. The People’s Elephant will look for a convincing 3-0 win over Kano Pillars.
