Enyimba will search for their fourth win when they visit Gombe United in the Nigerian Professional Football League on 16 January.
The People’s Elephants have started the season well, opening with three wins from four games. They are sitting comfortably in third place with nine points. Ahead of them is Remo Stars and Rivers United, who are in first and second place, respectively.
In their last match with Shooting Stars, Enyimba came out victorious courtesy of a Godwin Emmanuel goal, which gave them a 1-0 win and the full three points. The win ensures that Findi George’s side lays a foundation for the season.
These early games come across as deciding factors when the league season reaches its round-robin stages; the points dropped may cost you, or the points won may help you when giving the final push for the title.
Enyimba has hit the right strides so far, and they look on course to thrive this season as they go in search of an NPFL title. At this stage of the campaign, all Enyimba need to do is build their team spirit, and when the league starts taking direction after ten games, they will be in a steady place.
The early matches also afford the coach to establish their preferred formation and style of play they want the team to adopt. This period also allows new players to understand the club’s system. Players returning from injury are also welcomed during the season, and when they rejoin the group, they feel like new signings.
One player returning from a long-term absence is the club captain Austin Oladapo, returning from a six-month ban. He came on as a substitute against Shooting Stars and received warm applause from the Enyimba fans at the Enyimba Stadium.
His return couldn’t have come at a better time; the skipper will be an asset for Enyimba, and having him in the dressing room will be a significant motivating factor for the player and coach. In addition, his ability to attack with his ferocious pace and excellent shooting skills will Enyimba.
Easing Oladapo back to the team will be a priority for Findi George. The skipper is definitely in George’s plans for the season. Moreover, an important match is on the horizon for Enyimba as they meet Gombe United on Sunday.
Gombe United is in 16th place on the table; they have not had the best of starts to the campaign. They have played five matches, they have lost two games, drawn two and only won one. They will host Enyimba in what will be a difficult match for them.
Enyimba knows that the full three points can take them to the top of the league, so they will go all out when they square off with Gombe United. Enyimba should win Sunday’s match 2-0.
