Nigerian Super Eagles aiming at perfect record

18 January 2022

Nigeria will look to end their Africa Cup of Nations group stage campaign with a perfect record when they take on Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday, 19 January in Cameroon.

The Super Eagles have already booked their place in the last 16 of the tournament after winning their games against Egypt and Sudan. They lead their group with six points and are the favourites to bring home the AFCON cup title when the final takes place on 6 February.

In the encounter against Egypt, Nigeria played a high-intensity game and won the game 1-0. Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho scored a volley that is a contender for the goal of the tournament. Their defence on the day managed to defeat Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, which is something that many defences in football struggle to do.

The Super Eagles match against Sudan was highly effective, and they ended with an impressive 3-1 win. The team took the lead early in the first half thanks to Samuel Chukwueze and then doubled their lead right before halftime with a bizarre goal from Taiwo Awoniyi.  Moses Simon rounded off the scoring and the full three points.

Nigeria has delivered a five-star performance so far in the tournament. This team boasts a star-studded team full of players in some of Europe’s best clubs and has found the balance between defence, midfield and attack.

Their spin, which consists of goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, defender and captain William Troost-Ekong, two in on midfielder Wilfred Ndidi and Iheanacho, has led the well in the tournament so far.

The breakout player in the Nigeria team looks to be Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo who has been performing excellently. Controlling the midfield with Ndidi, the two are playing on a telepathic wavelength. Their partnership will be key in how Nigeria progress.

Nigeria head coach Jose Peseiro has allowed the players to play to their best ability and not complicate things. He will likely use the upcoming match against Guinea-Bissau to give fringe players some time on the field. This will see the spirit in the group remain high and allow those that have played two games to get a bit of rest.

Guinea-Bissau has only picked up one point in the tournament, drawing against Sudan and losing 1-0 to Egypt in their second match. The Super Eagles remain the firm favourites to win the match on Wednesday and should comfortably collect three points.
