Talanta out to slay giant Gor Mahia

14 January, 2022

Talanta, newcomers to the Kenyan Premier League, will be plotting the demise of the record-breaking league champion Gor Mahia when the two clubs meet on Saturday, 15 January.

And after they handed Kakamega Boyz their first defeat of the season a few weeks back, Talanta will want to slay their second titan this season.

Gor Mahia is in fifth place on the log, while Talanta is in eighth place with 20 points.

Talanta has been the season’s surprise package, impressing followers of the KPL and the media with their excellent performance in the league. Matches against the likes of Gor Mahia allow the newbies to test themselves against the big clubs and provide invaluable experience as they fight to gain promotion to the top division.

Talanta will want to use Saturday’s match as a platform to return to winning ways. Last weekend they narrowly lost 2-1 to City Stars. Goals from Anthony Kimani and Sven Yidah gave Stars the win.

Talanta didn’t take the loss at face value, they fought hard in the second half, and Francis Kahiro pulled one goal back after Alvin Ochieng set him up. Kenyatta’s troops went in search of an equalizer, but it did not come. They pushed their Nairobi rivals to the limits; that second-half display was excellent all around.

While respected as the biggest club in Kenya, Gor Mahia has lost the element of dominance this season. Coach Ken Kenyatta will test his tactics against his counterpart Mark Harrison. At the same time, the Talanta players will face off with some of the best players Kenyan football has to offer on Saturday.

If Talanta plays on the front foot when they visit Gor Mahia, they should expect a good result; we place our bet on a 1-1 draw or a smash and grab 1-0 win.
